Elizabeth Olsen: on the new Avengers film and her famous sisters

The Telegraph
22 April, 2015

If there were any question as to whether the actress Elizabeth Olsen remains in the shadow of her older sisters, Mary-Kate and Ashley, her role in the new Avengers film should put paid to that notion once and for all. “To be part of a movie that’s as universal as Avengers is incredible,” she says when we meet at Café Gratitude in West Hollywood, a celebrity-favourite vegan haunt where the walls are decorated with vacuously upbeat LA phrases such as “I adore myself and everyone else” and “I know I am divine”.

Petite and pretty, Olsen is instantly recognisable when she arrives, wearing gym clothes – an exercise top, leggings and black trainers – with her blond hair scraped back into a messy ponytail and a chic bag from The Row, one of her sisters’ fashion labels, over her shoulder.

Down-to-earth and self-deprecating, she is seen as the most “normal” of the Olsen sisters, apparently unscathed by the media circus that has surrounded her family since Mary-Kate and Ashley made their acting debut, aged only nine months, on the American sitcom Full House. “It’s just crazy,” says Olsen, 26, who is three years younger than them. “They’ve never had a year off work their whole lives.”

In recent years the twins have distanced themselves from the film industry, focusing on their work as fashion designers. “They’re amazing, diligent, kind, beautiful, hard-working women who have tons of responsibility and are great at what they do,” Olsen says.

In the meantime Elizabeth – or Lizzie, as she is known – has gently manoeuvred herself into the limelight. In 2011 she caused a sensation at the Sundance Film Festival with her beautifully nuanced performances in two independent films: Silent House, an American remake of a Uruguayan horror film; and the critically acclaimed drama Martha Marcy May Marlene, in which she played a girl who escapes a dangerous cult.

Since then she has delivered equally deft performances in several less memorable movies (Liberal Arts and Red Lights, for example), but she reached a much wider audience with last year’s Godzilla remake, in which she played a young nurse and mother married to a military bomb-disposal expert, the film’s hero, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. She reunites with Taylor-Johnson in Avengers: Age of Ultron, this time taking the role of his twin sister, Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, while he plays the superhero Quicksilver, also known as Pietro Maximoff.

April 22: Apple Store Meet the Filmmakers Event

Yesterday Elizabeth and director Joss Whedon attended the Meet the Filmmakers event at the Apple Store in London to talk about their movie and meet fans. At the event Lizzie confirmed the great news that she will return as the Scarlet Witch in the upcoming movie Captain America: Civil War.

We’ve heard rumors about which MCU characters may or may not play a part in Captain America: Civil War, but aside from some of the obvious major players we haven’t really had any other confirmations… until now. During the Meet The Filmmakers event at London’s Apple Store, Elizabeth Olsen was asked if she will be reprising her Avengers: Age Of Ultron role of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch for the Marvel threequel and responded affirmatively, saying: “I guess I’m allowed to talk about that now”. This has yet to be made official by Marvel, but after this it probably won’t be too long until it is. Olsen didn’t elaborate any further but did reveal that she begins shooting the movie in 2 weeks time in Atlanta.

Will Scarlet Witch Return in Captain America 3?

On possibility of Lizzie joining Captain America: Civil War.

Be warned, there will be SPOILERS for Avengers: Age of Ultron below, some of which we reported on back in March that have now been confirmed. This particular spoiler involves one of the new Avengers that joins the team at the end of the sequel. However, if you look at the recent marketing efforts for Avengers: Age of Ultron, this character has been referenced as an Avenger already. As it turns out, producer Kevin Feige teases that this hero will also be popping up in the first Phase Three movie, Captain America: Civil War. This is your last chance to avoid SPOILERS, so read on at your own risk.

Yesterday, we reported that Captain Marvel won’t be introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but the character was featured in an earlier draft of the script. As it turns out, director Joss Whedon had actually filmed “plate shots” to introduce Captain Marvel as one of the new Avengers team members at the end of the sequel, but they ended up using those shots for Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch instead, sporting her new costume as she joins the team. He also said that Scarlet Witch’s intro will “feed into” a movie that starts shooting in a few weeks, which is Captain America: Civil War. Here’s what Kevin Feige had to say below.

“The way we reveal Scarlet Witch [in costume] at the end of the movie? Those were Captain Marvel plate shots. Joss said, ‘We’ll cast her later!’ And I said, ‘Yeah Joss, we’ll cast her later.’ [Whispers to an invisible associate who isn’t Joss] ‘We’re not putting her in there!’ Finally Joss was like ‘Let’s use those plates to let Scarlet Witch fly into frame, give her a big entrance?’ And that makes sense – she’s come to their side, and she deserves the cool intro, which will feed into another movie we start shooting in a few weeks.”

The report from March did reveal that Captain America: Civil War will feature Scarlet Witch, along with previously-confirmed characters such as Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Crossbones (Frank Grillo), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), along with unconfirmed characters such as Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), War Machine (Don Cheadle) and a “fourteen-year-old Peter Parker.” Peter Parker has not been cast yet, but with Kevin Feige teasing the presence of Scarlet Witch in Captain America: Civil War, it seems possible that these other characters could be in the mix as well. With production starting soon in Atlanta, hopefully we’ll get confirmation of the full cast of characters that will be appearing in Captain America: Civil War.
